JAPANESE WOODEN CLOGS – A01
In a small sunlit room in the ancient city of Kyoto, Mai — a Vietnamese girl studying design abroad — gently ran her fingers across the smooth surface of a pair of Geta clogs. The wooden clogs carried a rustic dark brown finish, paired with deep blue Hanamo fabric straps woven with delicate hidden patterns. It was a gift from an elderly Japanese woodcarving artisan before she returned to her homeland.
That night was the summer fireworks festival. For the very first time, Mai slipped her feet into the Japanese wooden clogs and stepped onto the old streets.
“Clack… clack…”
The warm, rhythmic sound echoed each time the wooden soles touched the moss-covered stone pavement. That sound suddenly tightened her heart. A strangely familiar feeling flooded her mind.
Mai thought of her grandmother.
She remembered the hot summer days in the Vietnamese countryside where she grew up, hearing the sound of her grandmother’s wooden clogs echoing through the house veranda. Her grandmother wore wooden clogs to the market and across the yard while drying rice under the sun. The gentle “click-clack” of Vietnamese wooden clogs might have sounded lighter than the deep “clack-clack” of Japanese Geta, yet both carried the same language — the language of nostalgia and the timeless flow of culture.
Somehow, in two different countries, people both used the wood of their homeland to cradle their footsteps, placing the simplicity and pride of their culture into something seemingly ordinary. These Japanese Geta clogs looked unfamiliar at first glance, yet their spirit felt incredibly close to her heart.
When Mai returned to Vietnam, she carried the wooden clogs in her luggage, as if carrying a piece of the soul of Japan with her. She realized that loving one’s own culture does not mean closing oneself off from the world, but rather opening one’s heart to the beauty of other cultures — and through that, learning to cherish and preserve the traditional values of one’s homeland even more deeply.
